Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me Taping
June 7, 2010
Last night we were fortunate enough to attend the live taping of the popular NPR radio quiz show Wait Wait…Don’t tell Me at the Paramount theater (thanks, KUOW!) Host Peter Sagal and panelists Paula Poundstone, Luke Burbank, and Tom Bodett had us laughing the whole evening. Special guest, Seattle author Tom Robbins, proved to be as funny and interesting in person as he is in his books.
As a long-time Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me fan, it was especially interesting to hear the re-takes at the end of the show. They spent about 4 minutes re-taping several lines. I was amazed how Peter Sagal could continue to inject enthusiasm and energy into his lines after doing a 2.5 hour live show.
The other surprising fact is how much material must get edited between the live taping and the radio show! The show is one hour on the radio, and it last almost 2.5 hours live. It will be fun to listen to the broadcast version and see if I can pick out the edited pieces. I hope they don’t cut Paula Poundstone doing her McDonald’s rap…that was just too funny. What a great reminder that even polished professionals need editing…there is always room for improvement and tightening up the final product.
And, speaking from the Human Resources point of view, I was really surprised when one of the news quiz questions was about the case of a Citibank employee who claims she was fired because her male colleagues found it too difficult to concentrate around her because of her beauty. On the evening of April 15 you could find our Firm at Garage Billiards in Capitol Hill. Everyone enjoyed bowling and catching up with each other. Some of our employees who are starting in the summer stopped by and played some pool, too.April 15 – Tax Day Freebies
April 14, 2010
Who says you can’t get something for nothing anymore?
Here’s a list of Tax Day freebies I’ve heard about. Please note, I haven’t personally verified their accuracy.
Starbucks: Free coffee on April 15 if you bring your own reusable mug. The Starbucks offer is to help mark tax day in the United States, but it’s meant to honor a different cause. Help the planet by bringing in a reusable mug, rather than purchasing a new cup. Not only will you be saving a few dollars on your coffee expenses during the day, but you will be doing a small part towards helping out the planet at the same time.
Cinnabon: Tax Day Bites! On April 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 15, Cinnabon mall-based stores will be handing out two free cupcake bites to anyone that comes to one of their stores.
Taco Del Mar: Taxes Suck, Tacos Don’t! (Hey, they said it,not me.) Visit the web site and fill out a form to receive a coupon for a free taco.
MaggieMoo’s: Participate in Ice Cream relief and file-in-line for a free sample of Ice Cream Pizza from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Enjoy!
Busy Season Break: Jamba Juice
April 8, 2010
With staff going full speed working toward the April 15 deadline, we took a quick break and brought in some healthy smoothies from Jamba Juice last week. Keaton, Brian and Rebecca stand in line, while Elaine grabs hers (notice the excitement!). Most popular drink? The all-fruit Pomegranate Paradise. Yum.
Busy Season Bingo
March 29, 2010
Every day around 3 p.m. I have noticed a discernible buzz around the office. Tensions rise, anxiety levels increase…what’s going on? It can’t just be busy season! Nope, it’s our daily bingo drawing. This year we are playing Busy Season Bingo. We started in mid-February, and we’re playing three games. First to get a regular bingo line (5 in a row), first to get an “X”, and first to get blackout. Last week employees Kelley Kohn and Ben Altmaier both won when we drew number B15. Congratulations Kelley and Ben! They each won a day of vacation.
First person to get an X will win a month of coffee. The Blackout winner gets an iPod or a Kindle!
Thanks to Better Business Bingo for creating such a neat piece of software. We’re having fun!

Fruit and Cookie Friday
March 26, 2010
One of our most beloved busy season traditions is Fruit and Cookie Friday. Around 2 p.m. we hear an announcement over the intercom, and then it’s a race to the kitchen! Our cookie assortment comes from Specialties Bakery, and the fruit is delivered by local merchant Tom O’Connor from Pike Place Produce. The selection of fresh organic fruit only slightly offsets the guilt most people feel over the cookie consumption…but busy season requires extra energy! Take a look at Matt, Jared, Jessica and Sonja all lined up for some goodies.
Sullivan’s Steakhouse Coming to Seattle
March 19, 2010
It’s been a while coming, but finally there is light at the end of the tunnel! Ever since Consolidated Restaurants closed the beloved Union Square Grill in our office building, Two Union Square, we’ve been missing an easily accessible lunch and grab-a-drink-after-work spot. Yesterday the Puget Sound Business Journal announced that Sullivan’s Steakhouse is opening in June.
When we lost the Union Square Grill, at first I didn’t think much of it. There are still tons of fabulous restaurants located within a stone’s throw of our office and I wasn’t worried that we’d starve. What I hadn’t anticipated missing was the loss of a shared community gathering space. It was nice to wander into the bar or restaurant and see your co-workers on unplanned occasions. I often had the chance to chat with people I wouldn’t otherwise have spoken to that day, and to get to know someone better in a more relaxed environment.
W. P. Carey management Professor Blake Ashforth, who writes about ‘corporate tribalism,’ explains it this way:
- A pack of paralegals or a covey of consultants drinking java or hanging about the proverbial water cooler is not so different from a tribe of Neolithic hunters sitting around a campfire. We as a species have come a long way since the days when the morning commute meant braving saber-tooth tigers but, at our core, people are still very much the same social animals we’ve always been. We want to feel like we belong and we value our closest connections beyond people we don’t know.
- Small groups of employees function better if their members feel like they truly know one another. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the organization to encourage employees to develop personal rapport.
- When workgroups do not have the opportunity to socialize they can feel disconnected from their own tribe and thus the larger organization.
I think we do a great job at Peterson Sullivan of maintaining the corporate tribe. Whether it’s First Friday parties, the softball team, or volunteering together, we provide our employees with opportunities to develop close connections in a casual atmosphere outside of work. The really cool thing is that so many of those opportunities are generated and maintained by the employees themselves, with absolutely no involvement from HR. And it’s not just because that makes my job so much easier (although I really do appreciate that aspect!) But when I see employees getting together outside of work, willingly, voluntarily, and with no involvement or prodding from the company, I know it’s because they actually like each other and enjoy spending time together. And that’s just one of the reasons this is a great place to work.
What’s your favorite way of connecting with your work tribe?

Busy Season Behaviors
March 8, 2010
My job always gets really interesting this time of year. The accountants are so busy being accountants that if they do have time to stop, take a breath, and look up, they may find something that they normally take it stride is really, really, really driving them crazy.
Co-workers who sing softly under their breath all day. Bathrooms that aren’t perfectly clean. Dirty cups left in sinks. All the kind of things you may let roll off your back any other time of year, but find hard to tolerate when you’re slammed.
Someone even took the time to survey people and ask them about their “Most Annoying Co-Worker Behavior.”
What bugs you when your patience is low?
Lost in Alaska
March 1, 2010
Apparently our clients worried we would get lost and left us some helpful signage. Later, Matt and Ben relax at the airport.
